superb

Hello first grade! We are still working out some problems with the Word of the Week videos, so there will not be a video this week. We do have a new word though!

The Word of the Week is superb.

Superb is an adjective. It means "excellent" or "very fine."

Superb is a great word to use when you are describing something you really like! For example, I think my mom's blueberry pie tastes superb. I also think that Taylor Swift gave a superb concert at the FedEx Forum. She is a superb guitar player!

Here are some synonyms, or words that mean the same thing as superb:
excellent
fine
great
magnificent
outstanding
splendid
super

Write a comment and tell me something that you think is superb.

service

Hi first grade! I have been having some problems with the videos here on my blog, so this week we won't have a video to watch. Hopefully I can get it worked out in time to make a video for next week's word. But don't worry, you can still look at the blog at home or in your classroom, and you can still write comments about the word!

The word of the week is service!

Service is a noun, and it means "a helpful act."

On Monday, we took a day off of school to remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I chose service as our word this week because lots of people spent Monday doing service activities as a way to honor Dr. King's memory. Dr. King believed that we should love everybody, and one way that we can show our love for people is by serving them.

Acts of service can be big or small. You can do small acts of service every day to show your friends and family how much you love them. I like to serve my mom by getting the mail for her and emptying the dishwasher. Mrs. Asbell serves me by making extra coffee for me when I look tired in the morning.
What are some ways that you can serve the people that you love? Could you make your bed in the morning? Could you help clean up around the house? Could you say something kind to a friend at school?

I want you to think of one act of service that you can do this week to show someone that you love them. It can be a big act or a small one! Then write a comment and tell me about the act of service that you are going to do.

tranquil

I love winter! It is my favorite season. My favorite thing about winter is... snow days! I like to sit on my couch with a mug of hot chocolate and watch the snow fall. I also like to watch the ducks walk on the frozen pond outside my window. And I especially like to take walks through the snowy, quiet, tranquil woods and neighborhoods.

jovial

Christmas is coming! I just love the Christmas season, don't you? I like decorating the tree with pretty ornaments, baking delicious cookies, and watching my favorite Christmas movies. I also love singing Christmas carols! Singing carols always puts me in a jovial mood! Click on the play arrow below to watch a video about the word jovial. Then write a comment about a Christmas tradition that makes you feel jovial.

attire

It sure is rainy today! It rained a whole lot yesterday, and the weather forecast says it's going to rain almost all week. This morning before I left the house, I had to put on special attire so that I wouldn't get too wet. Do you have special attire that you wear on rainy days? I wear my polka-dot rain coat and rain boots.
Click on the play button below to watch a video about the word attire. Then write a comment that tells me about a time when you have had to wear special attire. Maybe it was during hot, snowy, or rainy weather. Maybe you wore certain attire while playing a sport or participating in an activity after school. What special attire did you have to wear?
