compromise

The word of the week is compromise.

Compromise is a verb.

You compromise when both people give in a little to settle a disagreement.

If you and a friend are arguing over something, you may have to compromise in order to settle your argument.

My brother and I could not agree about what game to play. We compromised by playing my game for 30 minutes and then playing his game for 30 minutes.

Sometimes when you compromise, you don't get exactly what you want. But it is better to compromise with someone than to keep arguing! Good friends are always able to compromise when they have a disagreement.

Can you think of a time when you had to compromise?

Hi first grade! You all did a superb job in the animal play this week! I think the "Who Am I?" slides that you made in technology really baffled the audience!

blunder

The word of the week is blunder.

Blunder is a noun.

A blunder is a silly or careless mistake.

If you are too hasty when doing work in the classroom, you might make a blunder, like forgetting to put your name on your paper.

I made a blunder when I forgot to put sugar in the chocolate chip cookies I baked. They tasted terrible!

Sometimes people call me Mrs. Horton instead of Ms. Hunter! That is an easy blunder to make, since our names are similar.

Have you ever made a blunder? Tell me about it!

Cherish is a verb.

Cherish means to care for or to feel love for.

When we cherish someone, it means that we care about someone, or that someone is special to us. I know you all cherish your friends and family! Here are some special people that I cherish:

I cherish my friend Mrs. Abell because she is a good listener.

I cherish my brother Matt because we do fun things together. This is a picture of my brother acting silly on our trip to Belize.

I cherish the high school students in the youth group at church because they are really good at serving others. Here is a picture of the youth group on a mission trip.

I cherish the first graders at St. George's because they are good friends to each other!

Who do you cherish? Write a comment that tells someone you cherish and why you cherish that person!

Hasty is an adjective. It means "done quickly or with little thought." Hasty can also mean "fast."

service

Hi first grade! I have been having some problems with the videos here on my blog, so this week we won't have a video to watch. Hopefully I can get it worked out in time to make a video for next week's word. But don't worry, you can still look at the blog at home or in your classroom, and you can still write comments about the word!

The word of the week is service!

Service is a noun, and it means "a helpful act."

On Monday, we took a day off of school to remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I chose service as our word this week because lots of people spent Monday doing service activities as a way to honor Dr. King's memory. Dr. King believed that we should love everybody, and one way that we can show our love for people is by serving them.

Acts of service can be big or small. You can do small acts of service every day to show your friends and family how much you love them. I like to serve my mom by getting the mail for her and emptying the dishwasher. Mrs. Asbell serves me by making extra coffee for me when I look tired in the morning.
What are some ways that you can serve the people that you love? Could you make your bed in the morning? Could you help clean up around the house? Could you say something kind to a friend at school?

I want you to think of one act of service that you can do this week to show someone that you love them. It can be a big act or a small one! Then write a comment and tell me about the act of service that you are going to do.

tranquil

I love winter! It is my favorite season. My favorite thing about winter is... snow days! I like to sit on my couch with a mug of hot chocolate and watch the snow fall. I also like to watch the ducks walk on the frozen pond outside my window. And I especially like to take walks through the snowy, quiet, tranquil woods and neighborhoods.
